MMORPG’s and World of Warcraft

MMORPG is an achronym for Massive(ly) Mutliplayer Online Role Play(ing) Game.  MMORPG is purely a genre of computer game in which there are hundreds and even millions of gaming players across the internet. In the case of World of Warcraft; WoW;  there are many millions of gamers worldwide.

Generally the MMORPGs player accepts the part of his or her own character and has to navigate strange worlds and realms to complete quests and tasks.

Invariably those worlds will be hosted on a permanent server. Specific actions carried out by the players will have an impact on the realm or world such as in World of Warcraft (WoW). Therefore making the realm or world interactive, even if the player is not actually playing the game.

Referred to as being “real time”, this is how MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft (WoW) emulate the real world. An incredible instance in World of Warcraft event occurred where a virtual spell effect lowered players health steadily over time. The illness actually spread from player to player. Finally the disease impact became out of hand.

When players ran back to towns and cities the virus spread, eventually turning into an epidemic. Sometime later, a patch was released to”heal” the problem. Nevertheless the WoW community was completely stunned at how accurately behaviour seen in the game resembled real life.

Many MMORPGs, such as World of Warcraft (WoW) and Guildwars, reside in fantasy and myth and incorporate spells and magic. Many are based in outer space where the particpant has to command a spacecraft or maybe even their own planet.

Others are created around the real world. With the advent of Google maps it may be feasible to create MMORPG’s worlds closely emulating our real world.

Do you recall MUDs?  These were Multi-User Dungeons and were the first MMORPGs. Usually MUD’s are simple text based programs with which the players utilise commands to interact and control their “character”, the fictional world, plus other players.

Simple 2D graphical versions and even 3D MUDs do exist. Possessing much similarity to MUDs there are browser based on MMORPGs such as RuneScape, which is played completely within the users browser. These might be simple pages of text or highly complex 3D renderings. They may offer similar functionality of more developed MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft (WoW).

Not so long ago MMORPGs were virtually unknown. These days they are commonplace for most gamers around the world. In fact many millions of participants spend millions of dollars a year learning to escalate their abilities to the top of their gaming ability with such hugely popular games  as World of Warcraft (WoW).
